In Halifax’s North End, Linda Carvery began her musical journey at the Cornwallis Street Baptist Church. Since then, she has become an accomplished jazz, blues, and gospel singer in both solo and collaborative projects, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the African Nova Scotian Music Association. For her first CD Yesterday / Today (2000), she was awarded the East Coast Music Award for Best Jazz Artist. Also a talented stage performer, she has appeared in musical productions Gospel at Colonus and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas at Neptune Theatre, Eastern Front Theatre’s production of George Elliott Clarke’s Whylah Falls, and Mulgrave Road Theatre’s Shadows in the Cove and 5 Poets Breaking Into Song. As a prominent performer in Nova Scotia, Linda helps to foster the province’s artistic hub, having served as President of the Nova Scotia Mass Choir and as a part of Symphony Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Arts Council.

Alongside her illustrious artistic career, Linda is an active advocate in the African Nova Scotian community. She is former Executive Director of the African Nova Scotian Training Centre, and has served on boards such as the Halifax Housing Authority. For many years she has worked on behalf of youth, families in crisis, and incarcerated women, and has served on committees and councils in Nova Scotia.
