Presence in the Industry: Movement Making and Independent Artistry

Prismatic Arts Festival and ANSMA are thrilled to present Mumu Fresh at the ANSMA Town Hall, for a conversation about creating space when there is none, the power of being present, and education/self-ownership as an independent artist.

Maimouna Youssef also known as Mumu Fresh is GRAMMY-Nominated, Indigenous Music award-winning, 3 X Washington Area Music award (WAMMIE) winning, Urban World Music Video award-winning, Musical and Cultural Ambassador for the US State Department, former elected governor of the DC chapter of The Recording Academy, IMAN central roster artist and an Ambassador of The Black Music Collective, sound healer and an independent music mogul for her generation. She is committed to ‘Art Activism’ and has performed and given lectures at dozens of Universities throughout the US and abroad as well as within the US prison system. Mumu Fresh is a global citizen, musical healer, cultural philanthropist, and community pillar.

In 2020, she founded her own online music education platform called “Muniversity Studies”, a reimagined music education program that approaches the business of creating & releasing music from a culturally responsible, independent, and holistic perspective. The goal of which is to teach aspiring and re-emerging artists how to re-imagine the music business and thrive independently with purpose.

Among her most recent accomplishments is her contribution to creating and launching the Recording Academy’s historic trustee award entitled, “Best Song For Social Change” which was presented live in 2023 at the 66th GRAMMY awards show to prolific audience members including The First Lady, Jill Biden.

In this open ended conversation + workshop we will discuss:
  • Becoming a decision maker in your surrounding industry; the artist’s career, the social environment, and how to navigate making music with a message
  • Being a successful independent artist; the why, the importance of self- education, and how to be successful “on your own”
  • Exploring multiple genres and avenues of music and music business simultaneously

After the discussion will be a sharing opportunity. Bring your songs with a message and let’s explore the “scary” world of social commentary music together.

Derived from Shion’s own choreographic practice integrating dance with calligraphy, participants will be guided through an introductory lesson on Japanese calligraphy leading into an improvised movement score, embodying the brushstrokes of the calligraphy pieces that were just created. Join us in taking intentional time to connect the mind and body, while exploring a traditional art form from a contemporary perspective.
