Re-membering Kmɨtkinu
Workshop Performance

1:15 PM – 2:15 PM

Participants will have chance to preview an early iteration of Re-membering Kmɨtkinu: a collaborative, multi-sensory, land-based dance performance being developed by Mocean Dance, and Sarah Prosper (Eskasoni First Nation), and shalan joudry (Bear River First Nation).

Re-membering Kmɨtkinu is a response to shalan joudry’s poem Kmɨtkinu, from the Mi’kmaw word meaning “our homeland”. The poem traces Mi’kmaw history from pre- to post-colonization, calling for truth-seeking, solidarity, and collective healing, mirrored in the land’s own restoration. Centred on connection, it aims to strengthen relationships and build hope between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and the land.

Slow Touring
Think Tank

2:30 PM – 4:30 PM

This gathering brings together minds from across the arts industry in conversation to discuss the still-evolving concept of slow touring, with an eye towards building out a tour for Re-membering Kmɨtkinu. Eschewing the transactionalness of colonial touring models, slow touring is rooted in the values of care and relationality, prioritizing artist wellbeing, community engagement, and environmental sustainability. The performance is just one aspect of the engagement: opportunities for teaching, arts education, and relationship building are just as important. Drawing rich insights from the participants’ unique perspectives and varied positions within the arts, the transformative potential of this emerging touring model will be explored.
