Led by Artistic Director Sherry J. Yoon and Artistic Producer Jay Dodge, Boca del Lupo’s original productions are co-created and directed by Sherry and feature Jay’s writing, performances, and designs. During the pair’s tenure, the company has received numerous awards including Jessies for Outstanding Design, Outstanding Production, Significant Artistic Achievement, and Outstanding Performance; the Critic’s Choice Award for Innovation; and the Alcan Performing Arts Award.

For Boca del Lupo, collaboration is the core tenet of their creativity. Working across cultures and disciplines, their productions are energized by the collision and confluence of difference. Since their inception in 1996, Boca del Lupo’s artistic focus has explored cultural hybridity and interdisciplinarity by consciously convening artists from diverse backgrounds and giving them voice within the work through the company’s established processes.

Red Phone

Conceived by Sherry Yoon and designed by Jay Dodge, with technology by Carey Dodge, Red Phone is a conversation that you will not soon forget. Part theatre and part social intervention, Red Phone is an audience-to-audience performance that utilizes the intimacy of a phone call and the technology of a teleprompter. It takes place between two hand-crafted, fully enclosed phone booths outfitted with a vintage red phone and an integrated teleprompter. Two at a time, audience members engage each other in a five-minute conversation in the booth. The act of having the conversation with an unseen partner provides an anonymity that adds to the intimacy of the performance, encouraging participants to be the actor in their own theatrical experience. Red Phone is a one-of-a-kind performance that has been described as the theatrical equivalent to singing in the shower. Free of charge, anyone can walk up and into the booths with a friend or family member and spend 5 minutes engaging in some of the most urgent, touching, thought provoking conversations written by some of the most exciting writers in Canada.

In 2020, Prismatic Arts Festival and Boca del Lupo commissioned local playwright and former Halifax poet laureate Shauntay Grant to write Red Phone’s first Nova Scotian script. This year, audiences will be able to experience Red Phone at Prismatic 2022. Shauntay and her contribution to the project will join the ranks of playwrights across the country whose scripts bring Red Phone to life by engaging strangers in thought-provoking, compelling dialogue.
